Appendix B.1: The Routhian Calendar

Years:
The Routhian Calendar counts years starting from the year of the Phylrouth's liberation from the reign of the İstaŋlar, said to be at the hands of the Four-Winged Beast. This year is designated as 1 RE (Routhian Era). All years prior to 1 RE count backwards from it, and use the designation BRE (Before Routhian Era).

Each year of the Routhian Calendar is also assigned to one of the four essential elements, in a repeating pattern reflective of the natural seasons, beginning with autumn: Mainasailas (mɛ-nɑ-sɛ-lɑs; earth), Bedasailas (ve-dɑ-sɛ-lɑs; wind), Runisailas (ɹʌ-ni-sɛ-lɑs; water), Kalysailas (kɑ-lɪ-sɛ-lɑs; fire). Each year, aim'Psantzira, the first day of the year, falls on the day of the week corresponding to the same element as that of that year; due to the number of days in Qartaria's solar year (three hundred and sixty-five) and the number of days in the Routhian week (four), the established pattern is maintained. This aspect of the calendar, however, was not introduced until the year 896 RE, which the Routhian Church of the Four-Winged Beast declared in its aim'Psantzira celebration to be "The Year of Earth".

Months:
The Routhian calendar has twelve months, three in each season. The first month of a season, designated by the suffix -loba (lo-vɑ), and the last month of a season, designated by the suffix -donath (do-nɑθ), each have thirty days; the middle month of a season, designated by the suffix -saiphe (sɛ-fe) has thirty-one days.

The first day of the year, aim'Psantzira, is considered separate from the months and the seasons. After aim'Psantzira, the year begins with autumn:

Lyte: The Earth Season (Autumn)
Lyteloba
Lytesaiphe
Lytedonath

Saiba: The Wind Season (Winter)
Saibaloba
Saibasaiphe
Saibadonath

Thedi: The Water Season (Spring)
Thediloba
Thedisaiphe
Thedidonath

Kalo: The Fire Season (Summer)
Kaloloba
Kalosaiphe
Kalodonath

Weeks:
The Routhian calendar has four days, corresponding to the essential elements as the years of the four-year cycle do: Mainalos (mɛ-nɑ-los; earth), Bedalos (ve-dɑ-los; wind), Runilos (ɹʌ-ni-los), Kalylos (kɑ-lɪ-los). While Mainalos is conventionally considered to be the "first" day of the week, it could be argued that in any given year, the first day of the week is the elementally corresponding day, on which aim'Psantzira lands.

Days:
Within the months, days are designated numerically. In writing and speech, the number comes before the month, which comes before the year; if the day of the week is also present, it will be between the month and the year.
